Port St Mary Lifeboat Station - Callouts Monday 9 th August 1999

At 2.55 pm today, RNLB Gough Ritchie II was called out to assist a Port St Mary based 18 foot long dayboat called "Sea Mist". The boat had seven people on board; they had been on the Calf of Man during the morning and on the way back to PSM had run out of fuel for their outboard engine. They dropped anchor off the Sugarloaf rock at the Chasms, approximately three quarters of a mile from the harbour. They were equipped with a VHF radio, a mobile telephone and red flares. Due to the cliffs causing a radio shadow for the VHF radio they used the mobile phone to call Liverpool Coastguard for help.

There was a fresh Nor- easterly wind , force 5-6 but the cliffs gave them a lot of shelter. When the lifeboat arrived all seven people were taken off before their craft was towed safely back to harbour.

The whole incident was over in forty minutes.
